Unique in Germany:
Since May 2022: Second location in Cologne specialising in the 1st trimester
Under the name Praenatal plus 1, you will find our second office in Erftstraße 19 A, the old Cologne calibration office, since May 2022. Location in Cologne. Unlike in our Main practice at Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring 27-29, we at Praenatal plus 1 specialise exclusively in diagnostics in the 1st trimester. This specialisation is currently unique in Germany.
The first, very close look at your child!
The first trimester of pregnancy is an emotional time for most parents. The joy of the new life is often accompanied by uncertainty and fears as to whether the baby will grow up healthy.
An early Ultrasound diagnostics between 11+0 and 13+6 weeks' gestation can alleviate many worries or, in the event of abnormalities, offer in-depth counselling and targeted care during pregnancy.

Early malformation diagnostics in the 1st trimester offers
- the detection, classification and counselling of early recognisable malformations
- Risk calculation for the three most common chromosomal disorders and subsequent counselling ("first trimester screening")
- Pre-eclampsia screening: risk calculation for the development of early pre-eclampsia and, if necessary, recommendation of low-dose aspirin medication for prophylaxis
- Early initiation of genetic tests due to recognisable malformations or an increased familial risk

Prenatal plus 1: A personalised framework for ultrasound examinations in the 1st trimester
The first few weeks of pregnancy are a very special experience for many parents. In addition to the anticipation of the new life, it is not uncommon for fears and uncertainties to arise regarding the baby's health. This uncertainty is common to all expectant parents and we have set ourselves the goal of providing the appropriate framework for examinations in the 1st trimester.
For this reason, we will be offering our examinations in the first trimester from May 2022 in specially created rooms.
Praenatal plus 1 is only a few minutes' walk from the practice on Kaiser-Wilhelm-Ring and is therefore in close contact with the main practice.
What's new?
With Praenatal plus 1, the focus is solely on examinations in the 1st trimester. This includes early malformation diagnostics, classic combined first trimester screening, early malformation diagnostics before carrying out a cf-DNA test (NIPT) and carrying out procedures such as chorionic villus sampling and amniocentesis.
What do you already know about us?
Bright and friendly rooms create a pleasant atmosphere for pregnant women and their relatives. State-of-the-art practice equipment and our concept of in-depth information, detailed Ultrasound examination and personalised advice create medical care at the highest level. Our understanding of our role is all-encompassing. In the event of abnormalities, we advise and support you emphatically and put you in touch with other specialists. These may include paediatricians, paediatric surgeons, human geneticists and pastoral support.
Prenatal cf-DNA blood test - best combined with an early organ ultrasound scan
The prenatal blood test (NIPT) currently provides a very reliable indication of the probability of trisomy 21 in the unborn child. Other, rarer chromosomal disorders such as trisomy 18 (Edwards' syndrome) and trisomy 13 (Pätau syndrome) as well as abnormalities of the sex chromosomes can also be analysed, albeit with a slightly lower detection rate.
We always recommend carrying out these tests in combination with a qualified ultrasound examination and individual consultation.
If the pregnant woman has a very low background risk and an unremarkable ultrasound scan, further testing for foetal trisomy can often be dispensed with. The prenatal blood test does not detect structural malformations. However, these make up the majority of perinatally relevant anomalies. Most other chromosomal abnormalities and syndromic diseases cannot be recognised either.
If abnormalities in the foetus indicate a malformation or a high risk of a chromosomal disorder, an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling should be carried out, depending on the findings, in order to initiate a comprehensive diagnosis as quickly as possible.
